An Indiana shoplifter drove away in the arresting officer’s cruiser but was caught quickly when a relative ratted her out.

Heather Johnson, 21, was cuffed in the back seat of a Lawrence police cruiser parked at local Walmart where she has stolen electronics, police say. When the arresting officer went to get something from the trunk of the vehicle, Johnson unbelted herself, worked her handcuffed arms to the front of her body, jumped into the front seat and sped away.

Responding officers located the cruiser a mile away without Johnson. But the relative that the suspect called for help ratted her out. The relative found the nearest officer and turned Johnson in.

So instead of just shoplifting, Johnson is charged with felony escape, auto theft and resisting law enforcement.
