A New Jersey man wasn’t just a dumb crook. He was a bad dad.
Alleon Gayles, 44, tried to walk out of a Walmart store with a 50-inch TV, showing an employee a week-old receipt as proof of purchase. Even worse, he had his 5-year-old son with him for the scam in Linden, N.J.
The suspect was found with the TV as well as stolen scissors and a battery charger on Nov. 11, 2015. Video surveillance shows Gayles load the TV into a cart and then rip a scissor from its packaging to cut the security sensor off the TV, police say. The employee noticed the date on the receipt and contacted security, leading them to take the man and his son into custody.
Gayles reportedly confessed that he had “made a big mistake,” according to authorities. He was charged with third-degree shoplifting and the N.J. Department of Children and Families was asked to evaluate the family situation and ensure the child’s welfare.
